MellonSquarePark-PittsburghAfter decades of neglect, Pittsburgh’s Mellon Square — the first public park in the U.S. built on top of a parking garage — has been restored to look as fresh and glorious as it did when the space first opened in 1955, reports The Dirt, the American Landscape Architecture Association newsletter.

Designed by local architecture firm Mitchell & Ritchey in collaboration with landscape architect John Ormsbee Simonds, the space was restored by the Vermont-based firm Heritage Landscapes, which specializes in restoring historic parks and public spaces.

Next time the Cool Spaces! team is in Pittsburgh, we will definitely carve out time to visit this high point of Midcentury Modern landscape design.
